Finding the Perfect Balance: An Interview with Asst. Professor Rikki, on Her Modest and Professional Wardrobe

In the world of teaching, maintaining a wardrobe that is both comfortable and professional can be challenging. For Rikki, a seasoned educator with years of experience, finding the right balance in her outfits is crucial. I had the pleasure of sitting down with her to discuss how she selects her back to school looks and the importance of modesty, comfort, and professionalism in the classroom. Take a read of our conversation below!

So Rikki, can you share with us why you prioritize professional wardrobe?

Absolutely. As a school counselor of 7 years and now going into my first year as an assistant professor in a college setting, I believe that modesty is key to maintaining a level of professionalism and respect in the classroom. It’s important for me to set a positive example for my students, and dressing modestly helps me do that. Additionally, modest clothing allows me to feel comfortable and confident throughout the day, whether I’m teaching a lecture, attending a meeting, or mentoring students.

Love that answer!! Thanks Rikki! Another question for you, What types of outfits do you typically wear to maintain a cohesive and work-appropriate look?

Honestly, my wardrobe is quite versatile, I really enjoy mixing and matching different pieces to create a cohesive look so I kind of have a color scheme that works for me. Black, denim, olive…just a few colors I love building off of.  I often wear skirts (Braylynn & Quinn are my faves) and graphic tees, flowy dresses (Kate is fabulous), and t-shirt dresses (The Jane!!!) paired with jackets, (like the Shea!). For instance, a midi skirt paired with a graphic tee gives an elevated look but still fun in the classroom, while a t-shirt dress with a tailored jacket adds a touch of professionalism but I can still throw a graphic tee over a dress and make the outfit look completely different, yet still professional.

I love how you love your graphic tees and versatility, Rikki! How do you make sure your outfits stay comfortable for long teaching days?

Comfort is just as important as appearance. I choose fabrics that are breathable and allow for easy movement, such as cotton, linen, and soft knits. Additionally, I avoid overly tight or restrictive clothing and always need pockets!! Layering is also key; I often bring a colorful cardigan or jean jacket to adjust to the temperatures throughout the day, and yes they have to have pockets too! Haha.

Pocket lovers unite!! ;) Can you give us some tips Rikki, on how to create a versatile and modest wardrobe for professional settings?

Sure!! I’m no expert but have learned most of this from shopping with Inherit and watching the live sales!  Here are a few tips that have worked well for me:

  1. Invest in Quality Basics: High-quality basic pieces like the Quinn, Essential Tees, and Kate dresses are the foundation of any versatile wardrobe. Opt for neutral colors that can be easily mixed and matched!

  1. Layering is Your Friend: Layering adds dimension to your outfits and allows you to adapt to different settings and temperatures. A well-fitted denim jacket or a long and soft cardigan can transform a simple dress into a professional ensemble. Make sure they have pockets too... ;)

  1. Accessorize Thoughtfully: Accessories can enhance your look without being overpowering. Scarves, fun socks or leggings paired with dresses and skirts, and belts can add a personal touch while keeping your outfit cohesive and professional.

  1. Comfy Shoes that are cute: Choose shoes that are both fun and comfortable. Steve Madden sandals, Toms wedges, and Keds sneakers are great options for maintaining a polished look without sacrificing comfort!  Shoe Collection

Finally Rikki, how do you stay confident in your outfit choices throughout the day?

Confidence comes from feeling good in what you wear. When I select my outfits, I prioritize both comfort and style, ensuring that I feel at ease and capable in any situation. Knowing that my clothing reflects my personal values and professional standards boosts my confidence. Additionally, having a few go-to outfits that I know work well for different occasions helps me feel prepared and self-assured no matter where the day takes me.

Thank you so much Rikki for the interview! We really value your time and just love you so much. Thank you for sharing that by investing in quality basics, embracing layering, and prioritizing comfort, you can create a versatile and cohesive wardrobe that keeps you confidently covered throughout your busy teaching days!
